Larry Gerig Receives the IRMCA Hall of Fame Award
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) presented its prestigious 2016 Hall of Fame Award to Larry Gerig of Erie Haven Concrete, Inc. This award is presented to individuals working for producer members who have unselfishly given of their time and energies to advance the interests of the association and the industry and have demonstrated their dedication through strong participation in the IRMCA. Gerig was presented with the award during the annual IRMCA Short Course Program.
Gerig began his career with Erie Haven working in the maintenance shop at the age of 17. He soon advanced to shop foreman. While working at Erie Haven Gerig started his own hauling company: a single semi-tractor trailer hauling general merchandise. He recalls working outside on the truck after hours lying on cardboard in the snow. Eventually he built his own shop facility as the hauling business – still a sideline business – grew to include 40 dump trucks, 88 power units and 200 pneumatic trailers.
In 1986 France Stone, parent company of Erie Haven, made the company available for purchase. Gerig saw the opportunity and, with another partner, bought Erie Haven. Shortly after that partners business was sold to an English company and, as Gerig recounts, “I woke up one day with new partners.” Three years later the English company began liquidating some United States assets and Gerig bought the remaining portion of Erie Haven along with Stone Street Quarries, Inc. Several years later Gerig purchased Irving Ready Mix in Fort Wayne.
Erie Haven currently operates 13 locations, four of which have double plants; a cement terminal and a building supply business at all the ready mix operations.
