skills to earn a trip the NRMCA Mixer Truck National Finals.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) held its 8th Annual Mixer Truck Competition on June 3rd, 2016.  Association member ready mixed truck drivers from around the state met again for competition at associate member Jobsite Supply’s downtown Indianapolis location.  Competitors included drivers from Irving Materials, Inc.; Ozinga Ready Mix Concrete, Inc.; Sagamore Ready Mix, LLC.

“This competition was developed to recognize individuals with exceptional abilities who deliver the world’s most versatile building product. It’s again time to recognize the Best of the Best,” said Terry Jones, director of environmental, safety and health at Irving Materials, Inc., (IMI).   Jones has been instrumental in developing and championing driver competition both locally and nationally.

The competition began with a one hour, written test covering concrete knowledge, safety, customer and company relations, environmental concerns and vehicle maintenance/operation.

The second phase of the competition was a truck inspection.  Each driver was given ten minutes to complete the inspection and find defects planted by organizers.  Sagamore’s Bobby Lightfoot received the only perfect score on the inspection.

The final phase of the competition consisted of competitors operating ready mix trucks in obstacle courses testing their driving skills: Parallel Parking, On-Target, Backing Up, Scale Box Backing, Pull in, Left Turn and Tennis Ball Drive Through.  Additional competition for bonus points included:  Bowling, Hoop Shoot and Egg Break.  Irving Material’s Verlin Wagler received a perfect score in the Bowling competition.

After totaling the three phases the 2016 winners are:

1st Place:  John Dowell, Ozinga Ready Mix Concrete, Inc. (repeat winner from last year).

2nd Place: Verlin Wagler, Irving Materials, Inc.

3rd Place:  Mike Gregg, Sagamore Ready Mix, LLC.

John Dowell will again be eligible to compete in the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s (NRMCA) Mixer Truck Driver Championship in Nashville, Tennessee.

Associate Member Jobsite Supply provided the facility. Associate members TEREX and Oshkosh provided mixer trucks.
