IRMCA Presents the Annual Short Course Program



INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) held its annual Short Course from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, 2016 at the Marriott Downtown. The Short Course is a multi-day program that allows ready mix concrete industry principals and employees involved in safety, environmental, operations and sales to network and stay abreast of current and new technology in the concrete industry.

The program began on Sunday evening with VIP Industry Summit Meeting followed by a reception.  Music at the reception was provided by Short Course participants in what has become their annual “Jam Session”.

Monday’s welcome address was given by IRMCA President Matt Haehl, Shelby Materials.  Professor Morton Marcus discussed the potential effects of the coming election on the Indiana economy. Vicki Kitchin, executive director of the Build Indiana Council (BIC) wrapped up the morning session with a legislative update.

The Monday luncheon included the IRMCA Individual Awards:  Outstanding Associate Award to Rick Ross, McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing, Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation Company; Carl D. Franks Award to Carl Applebaum, Essroc Italcementi; Hall of Fame Award to Larry Gerig of Erie Haven Concrete, Inc. and E.B. Rayburn, Jr. Award to Ben Woolard, Irving Materials Inc.

Monday afternoon sessions were divided into three concurrent tracks:  Technical, Safety & Environmental and Management.  The Technical Track presentations included: Challenges with Proper Testing by John Poncher, Chris Tull and Chad Clark; a panel discussion on Building Partnerships with your Suppliers and Searching for Value Sales Opportunities in Construction Plans and Specifications by Jason Wimberly, Grace Construction Products.

The Safety & Environmental Track presentations included: How to be Compliant with Stormwater Regulations by Lori Gates, Christopher B. Burk Engineering; Indiana Department of Labor Update by Timothy Maley, Indiana IOSHA and Michelle Ellson, Indiana Department of Labor; Driver Regulations Update by Russ Wilson, Teamsters Local 135.

The Management Track presentations included: They Drive Me Crazy! Managing & Retaining Millennials by Cara Silletto, Crescendo Strategies; Latest Trends in Dispatch by Tim Muenstermann, Digital Fleet and Wayne Dove, Trimble Navigation; Recent Indiana State Tax Developments for Concrete & Materials Manufacturers & Supplies by Nathan Hagerman, Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP.

The Tuesday program began with a presentation on Challenges with Exterior Concrete Exposure to Deicing Salts by Mike Byers, Indiana Chapter, American Concrete Pavement Association.  A panel discussion on Ensuring Success with Municipal Concrete Projects preceded the Project Award Luncheon.  The concluding luncheon Keynote Speaker was Charlie Adams and his topic was How the Miracle on Ice Happened. And Lessons from it!
