OUTSTANDING CONCRETE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Presented to
Alcoa Power Plant in Warrick County, Indiana
The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) presented the 2007 Outstanding Concrete Achievement Awards for projects in the State of Indiana on December 11, 2007 at the Indianapolis East Marriott.
In the category of Concrete Commercial & Industrial Projects: Industrial Projects, one of the winners is Alcoa Power Plant located in Warrick County.
The project team for the Alcoa Power Plant is the Project Owner: Alcoa Power Plant, the Architect/Engineering Firm: Fluor Corporation, the General Contractor and Concrete Finisher: Bowen Engineering and the ready mix producer: Irving Materials, Inc.
The Alcoa project in Warrick County used more than 60,000 cubic yards of concrete in five structures erected since January 2006, all ahead of schedule. Seventy percent of the work was completed during third shift, allowing the construction to minimally impact the power plant’s production schedule and other contractors on site. The congested work area allowed Bowen to be creative in their construction and engineering efforts. The ash pond soil base was stabilized by using cast piling that exceeded standard pilings by seven feet and site excavation was completed around the cast piling in a checker board pattern. There were more than 250,000 man-hours with no accidents and no time lost, amazing since 40,000 cubic yards of the concrete were poured within a 1200’ x 600’ area.
IRMCA presents these awards to recognize extensive application or imaginative use of concrete; and to honor the accomplishments of project owners, architects, engineers, contractors, owners and ready mixed concrete producers. |
