| OUTSTANDING CONCRETE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Presented to Army Corps of Engineers Little Calumet Levee Stage 5, Phase 2 Hammond and Highland, Indiana The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) presented the 2008 Outstanding Concrete Achievement Awards for projects in the State of Indiana on January 13, 2009 at the Indianapolis East Marriott. In the category of Concrete Infrastructure Projects: Stormwater, the winner is the Army Corps of Engineers Little Calumet Levee Stage 5, Phase 2 located in Hammond and Highland, Indiana. The project team is the owner, who also did the engineering and architectural aspects of the project: the Army Corps of Engineers, the general contractor and concrete finisher: Dyer Construction Company, Inc. and the ready mix producer: Ozinga Indiana RMC, Inc. The Little Calumet River project was designed to help control and alleviate flooding in Northwest Indiana. With heavy rains Northwest Indiana had on September 14 and 15, 2008 the concrete wall was successful in holding back the 14” plus rainfall we received that weekend. Although some areas did flood, those areas that had the new wall were protected from most of the flooding. A 4,000 psi concrete mix was used for this project. The wall panels, wall caps, and the post caps were all cast on the jobsite. Although many of the residents were opposed to trees being removed and the landscape changing, the decorative concrete wall not only served its purpose, but it also created an appealing decorative wall that only concrete could do. A totoal of 4,200 cubic yards of concrete were used on this project. IRMCA presents these awards to recognize extensive application or imaginative use of concrete; and to honor the accomplishments of project owners, architects, engineers, contractors, owners and ready mixed concrete producers. | | |
