OUTSTANDING CONCRETE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Presented to General Services Administration for the
Birch Bayh Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse 'Plaza Restoration'
The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) presented the 2006 Outstanding Concrete Achievement Awards for projects in the State of Indiana on December 5, 2006 at the Indianapolis Downtown Marriott.
In the category of Concrete Commercial & Industrial Projects: Patterned/Decorative, one of three winning projects is the Birch Bayh Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse 'Plaza Restoration'. The project team for the 'Plaza Restoration' is the owner/developer: General Services Administration, the architectural firm: Gibraltar Design, the general contractor: Volunteer Restoration, the concrete finisher: Collier Custom Concrete and the ready mixed producer: Irving Materials, Inc.
This project in downtown Indianapolis started renovation in Feb. of 2005 with a completion date of May 2006. Colored concrete was used on the entire project. A custom made color 'Federal Red' was used in conjunction with the stamped concrete. The bands surrounding the stamped concrete were poured using 'Winter Beige' color. Over all, the project used 850 yards of colored concrete.
Custom stamps were made so the pattern would fit perfectly in these 10' x 10' squares. To achieve this look, four different stamp patterns were used. The stamps used were 'sailor course, soldier course and running bond brick'. Herringbone brick stamps were also used to surround these squares. To make the stamped areas work, the most important detail of this project was the precise form work.
IRMCA presents these awards to recognize extensive application or imaginative use of concrete; and to honor the accomplishments of project owners, architects, engineers, contractors, owners and ready mixed concrete producers.
