OUTSTANDING CONCRETE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Presented to the Brad Mulzer Residence

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) presented the 2006 Outstanding Concrete Achievement Awards for projects in the State of Indiana on December 5, 2006 at the Indianapolis Downtown Marriott.

The winner in the Concrete Residential - Patterned/Decorative Category is the Brad Mulzer Residence, located in Southern Indiana. The project team for the Brad Mulzer Residence project is the Owner, Brad Mulzer, the Concrete Finisher, D & E Concrete, and the Ready Mix Producer, Tell City Concrete Supply.

In order to enhance the beauty and functionality of the newly installed pool, the homeowners chose decorative concrete. Because the long slope leading down to the pool was terraced with large limestone boulders, the homeowners wanted a pattern on the concrete surrounding the pool that would coordinate with the landscaping. They decided the stenciled pattern would be flagstone, in a color that coordinated with the coping around the pool.   Approximately 60 yards of concrete was used to create a unique entertainment space, which extended from the back of the home and continued around the entire pool. This project was challenging because it required numerous pours around the landscaping boulders and careful planning to maintain a continuous flow in the decorative flagstone pattern.

This project required detailed scheduling with the pool contractor, landscapers and the ready-mix company. All three worked closely together because the work of each was interdependent upon the other in order to complete the project. The homeowner plans to use the area extensively for entertaining where numerous people will gain information about decorative concrete and how it can be incorporated into and enhance the landscaping of a home. This is a great way to showcase the versatility of concrete.

IRMCA presents these awards to recognize extensive application or imaginative use of concrete; and to honor the accomplishments of project owners, architects, engineers, contractors, owners and ready mixed concrete producers.
