OUTSTANDING CONCRETE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Presented to
Bremen Highway Rehabilitation R&S 90701/3-1 in St. Joseph County
The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) presented the 2007 Outstanding Concrete Achievement Awards for projects in the State of Indiana on December 11, 2007 at the Indianapolis East Marriott.
In the category of Concrete Infrastructure Projects: Whitetopping, St. Joseph County won for their Bremen Highway Rehabilitation project.
The project team for Bremen Highway Rehabilitation R&S 90701/3-1 is the owner: St. Joseph County, the Engineering firm: St. Joseph County Engineering, the general contractor and concrete finisher: Rieth-Riley Const. Co., Inc. The ready mix producer is Kuert Concrete.
This project was bid with whitetopping being an option along with a ‘conventional’ bid for asphalt resurfacing. Four inches of whitetopping overlay was chosen as the best option when St. Joseph County looked at initial cost compared to life cycle costs and the long term saving of the bonded concrete overlay. The highway was milled four inches and Rieth-Riley made the decision to use its paving machine to place the concrete overlay, using the existing shoulders as their grade height, eliminating the need for string line and allowing the shoulders to be used for local residents to have access to their homes. This project required the use of 1370 cubic yards of concrete and it was placed in one day. This road is in a highly traveled and visible area and the future use of whitetopping will surely be impacted by the success of this project.
IRMCA presents these awards to recognize extensive application or imaginative use of concrete; and to honor the accomplishments of project owners, architects, engineers, contractors, owners and ready mixed concrete producers. |
