| OUTSTANDING CONCRETE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Presented to Century Center Island Park Renovation South Bend, Indiana The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) presented the 2009 Outstanding Concrete Achievement Awards for projects in the State of Indiana on January 19, 2010 at the Indianapolis Marriott North at Keystone at the Crossing in Indianapolis, Indiana. In the category of Concrete Commercial Industrial Projects-Patterned/Decorative, one of the winners is the Century Center Island Park Renovation in South Bend, Indiana. The project team is the City of South Bend, the Architecture Design Group, Inc., Gibson-Lewis, LLC, and the ready mix producer, Kuert Concrete, Inc. Island Park has a long and important history in the development of South Bend. This history, along with former structures on Island Park, made for some unique construction challenges. For instance, Gibson-Lewis faced the challenge of doing many smaller detailed pours on the Island with very little access because of the distance from truck access and weight restrictions on the only available bridge. All of the concrete on this project was integrally colored, thus complicating the project through increased requirements on maintaining accurate slumps with no jobsite water additions. After an initial trial pour, the decision was made to use Georgia buggies to maintain slump control and flexibility on placement. The Architecture Design Group designed an attractive and structurally effective layout. There were a total of 300 cubic yards of concrete used on this project. IRMCA presents these awards to recognize extensive application or imaginative use of concrete; and to honor the accomplishments of project owners, architects, engineers, contractors, owners and ready mixed concrete producers. | | |
