| OUTSTANDING CONCRETE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Presented to The Columbus City County Jail Columbus, Indiana The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) presented the 2009 Outstanding Concrete Achievement Awards for projects in the State of Indiana on January 19, 2010 at the Indianapolis Marriott North at Keystone at the Crossing in Indianapolis, Indiana. In the category of Concrete Infrastructure Projects - Pervious, the winner is the Columbus City County Jail in Columbus, Indiana. The project team is Bartholomew County, CBE, Charlie Bud, Best Excavating, C2 Construction and the ready mix producer, Shelby Materials. This project was on a site that made compliance with storm water regulations very difficult. The city needed a one acre parking lot but the site sloped away from the city storm sewer system. To satisfy the storm water regulations catch basins and tiles would have gone to the far corner of the lot. The water would then be captured in a vessel and then be pumped up to a storm sewer. All of the phase 2 requirements were in effect so a separator would be required. By converting some of the area of the parking lot to pervious, all of the storm water requirements were met. The area under the parked cars is pervious - there are deep French drains under the pervious to take the water away. The drive lanes sheet water to the pervious areas, then the water is filtered and returned to the environment. There were 200 cubic yards of concrete used in this project. IRMCA presents these awards to recognize extensive application or imaginative use of concrete; and to honor the accomplishments of project owners, architects, engineers, contractors, owners and ready mixed concrete producers. | | |
