OUTSTANDING CONCRETE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Presented to the City of Columbus-Parks Department
for 'Blackwell Park'
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) presented the 2006 Outstanding Concrete Achievement Awards for projects in the State of Indiana on December 5, 2006 at the Indianapolis Downtown Marriott.
In the category of Concrete Commercial & Industrial Projects - Pervious, one of the winning projects goes to the City of Columbus – Parks Department ‘Blackwell Park’. This is the first of its kind all-inclusive playground in the State of Indiana, providing a place for children and adults who are physically challenged or confined to a wheel chair a place to play along side with all peoples.
The design called for a pervious concrete surface that was to be a base for soft surface rubber tile. A pervious concrete walkway was also designed to go around the perimeter of the playground. The soft rubber tile surface will remain dry while allowing for a non-freezing surface to enable play year round.
The project totaled 380 yards of Pervious Concrete on this 28,000 square foot footprint. The job was placed with four inches of Pervious Concrete and was placed with a 26 foot Bunyan roller screed and an eight foot roller. The trucks were side by side during the discharge and the contractor's crew was able to place 140 cubic yards a day.
The project team for ‘Blackwell Park’ is the owner/developer: City of Columbus-Parks Department, the engineering firm: Christopher Burke Engineering, the contractor: Repp and Mundt, Inc., and the ready mixed producer: Shelby Materials, Inc.
IRMCA presents these awards to recognize extensive application or imaginative use of concrete; and to honor the accomplishments of project owners, architects, engineers, contractors, owners and ready mixed concrete producers.
