OUTSTANDING CONCRETE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Presented to the Fort Wayne-Allen Co. Airport Authority for the
Fort Wayne International Airport Taxiway C3
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) presented the 2006 Outstanding Concrete Achievement Awards for projects in the State of Indiana on December 5, 2006 at the Indianapolis Downtown Marriott.
In the category of Concrete Infrastructure Projects – Airports, the winning project goes to the Fort Wayne-Allen Co. Airport Authority for the Fort Wayne International Airport Taxiway C3.
The relocation of Taxiway C3 gives airplane traffic better access to and from Runway 14/32. To maintain airport operations without interruption, the runway was closed and reopened at the end of each workday. Special precautions were taken to assure airplanes could not fall off the edge of runway pavements throughout the construction period. Airport authorities are continuously upgrading airport facilities, aprons, taxiways and runways to accommodate more aircraft and attract more business and economic growth in the community.
The significance of using concrete was that it was the only way to go, no other material, including asphalt, could stand up to the constant wear and tear of aircraft on the taxiway. Preconstruction meetings were held with all project members to enable each trade to perform at an optimum capacity, resulting in a timely completion date and helping to produce the highest quality product possible.
The project team for Fort Wayne International airport Taxiway C3 is the owner/developer: Fort Wayne – Allen Co. Airport Authority, the Engineering firm: PBS & J, the general contractor and concrete finisher: E & B Paving, Inc. The ready mix producer is Erie Haven, Inc.
IRMCA presents these awards to recognize extensive application or imaginative use of concrete; and to honor the accomplishments of project owners, architects, engineers, contractors, owners and ready mixed concrete producers.
