| OUTSTANDING CONCRETE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Presented to Komodo Dragon Exhibit Indianapolis, Indiana The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) presented the 2009 Outstanding Concrete Achievement Awards for projects in the State of Indiana on January 19, 2010 at the Indianapolis Marriott North at Keystone at the Crossing in Indianapolis, Indiana. In the category of Concrete Commercial Industrial Projects - Other, one of the winners is the Komodo Dragon Exhibit located at the Indianapolis Zoo. The project team is the Indianapolis Zoo, Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf, Smock Fansler Construction and the ready mix producer, Concrete Industries, Inc. This project included a habitat for a feature exhibit of the Komodo Dragons. The display areas featured plexiglass viewing windows and concrete bases with ledges for visitors to sit and stand on for better viewing. Concrete was also used in the animal’s drinking pond. Concrete was used in this application because of its strength and utilitarianism. It is strong enough to contain the - dragons - in case they try to break free of their confined space. The logistics was interesting because they had to place the concrete, all the while, allowing visitor foot traffic though the Plains area. There were 50 cubic yards of concrete used on this project. IRMCA presents these awards to recognize extensive application or imaginative use of concrete; and to honor the accomplishments of project owners, architects, engineers, contractors, owners and ready mixed concrete producers. |
