OUTSTANDING CONCRETE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Presented to the Indianapolis Zoo for The Oceans Exhibit
in Downtown Indianapolis
The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) presented the 2007 Outstanding Concrete Achievement Awards for projects in the State of Indiana on December 11, 2007 at the Indianapolis East Marriott.
In the category of Concrete Commercial & Industrial Projects: Patterned/Decorative, The Indianapolis Zoo won for The Oceans, located in Downtown Indianapolis.
The project team for the Oceans is the owner/developer: the Indianapolis Zoo, the engineering firm: Fink Roberts & Petrie, Inc., the architectural firm: Ratio Architects, Inc., the general contractor and concrete finisher: Shiel Sexton and the ready mix producer: Builder’s Concrete & Supply Company.
This project in downtown Indianapolis features the shark petting tank wall. This wall was poured using a self consolidating concrete mix supplied by Builder’s Concrete. The mix had to flow under the window wells, around the rebar, and around the form liners which left a decorative imprint on the wall. The architect and zoo officials chose to use white cement and a custom integral color to make the concrete look like sand. There was 300 cubic yards used for the entire job ─ 16 cubic yards for the decorative wall.
IRMCA presents these awards to recognize extensive application or imaginative use of concrete; and to honor the accomplishments of project owners, architects, engineers, contractors, owners and ready mixed concrete producers. |
