In the category of Concrete Infrastructure Projects, Flowable Fill, the winning project was the State Road 32 and Nebo Road project in the Muncie area. Recipients include the following individuals and/or organizations: INDOT, Ken Herceg and Associates, Inc., E & B Paving, Fox Contractors and Irving Materials, Inc.
Original plans for the project called for storm sewers to be in right of way easements. Underground utilities storm sewers had to be moved into the middle of Nebo Rd. After re-engineering it was decided to use flowable fill to accelerate the completion time. Excavation of the project started on 6/9/05 with the first flowable pour on 6/13/05. A significant amount of flowable fill concrete was placed (550 cubic yards) on 7/11/05. The last pour of flowable fill was on 7/20/05 with a total of 3917 cubic yards - delivered in 17 days. The Indiana Department of Transportation estimated the time savings was approximately 60 days. The city of Muncie has had a flowable fill ordinance in place for approximately four years. The later start date caused the project to be off schedule. However, the use of flowable fill quickly put this project back in a position to complete the project before the end of the year. |
