In the category of Concrete Commercial & Industrial, Commercial Building Projects, one of the winning projects is the WalMart Supercenter located in Decatur. Recipients included the following individuals and/or organizations: WalMart, Structural Services, Inc. Midwest Engineering Services, S.C. Nestel, Inc., Gloyd Concrete and Erie Haven, Inc.
This project has many unique qualities. Many of the floor pours started between 3:30 and 5:30 a.m. The ready mix producer contacted the mayor of Decatur, so residents would know about the early noise and traffic. New environmental concerns facilitated a wash out station and a truck tire power wash area so that no mud or debris was tracked onto the roads. Tight water/cement ratios required the use of extra admixtures for the integral colored floor mix. The concrete was placed using laser screed technology. With the use of highway straight edgers and power troweling techniques, the overall floor ended up extremely flat. The project used approximately 140,000 square feet of integral color in the floor.
IRMCA presents these awards to recognize extensive application or imaginative use of concrete; and to honor the accomplishments of project owners, architects, engineers, contractors, owners and ready mixed concrete producers.
