Written by IRMCA | July 17, 2023

Like fine Kentucky Bourbon, the IMAA + IRMCA Summer Meeting was a perfect blend of unique flavors and exciting balance. The three-day event began Monday, July 10th in Louisville, Kentucky at The Hotel Distil.

Rooftop Reception
Against the historic backdrop of Whiskey Row, the Welcome Reception at the Bitter's End Rooftop Bar kicked off the evening. After a four-year hiatus, the power of genuine connections quickly bridged the gap, reigniting old friendships and forging new ones. The highlight of the night was the eagerly awaited Hot Wheels© Concrete Truck Drag Race! Industry pros embraced their competitive spirit, strategically racing their mini front discharge trucks down the track.

In between exhilarating heats, participants showcased their skills (and occasional mishaps!) behind the wheel of the Ready Mix Driver Simulator. With delicious Kentucky cuisine, signature cocktails, and an air of friendly rivalry, the Welcome Reception set the stage for a successful and exhilarating meeting!

Educational Sessions
Attendees had the opportunity to participate in three valuable educational sessions. On Tuesday morning, Dr. Julie Gahimer, PT, HSD, presented 'Leading with a Wellness Mindset Workshop'. She explored strategies for inspiring others and creating a healthy work environment. Participants gained insight into various dimensions of wellness, the impact of mindset on decision making, and the importance of grit and resilience.

Dr. Mike Clark, PhD delivered an enlightening presentation on the 'Economic Outlook' Wednesday morning. With expertise in labor, health, and economic development, Dr. Clark shed light on the concrete industry's current and future landscape, emphasizing the economy's influence on construction. The meeting concluded with 'Managing and Predicting Fatigue in the Workplace', presented by Jeffrey Sease, COO of Predictive Safety SRP. Mr. Sease explored the relationship between delayed reaction, cognitive impairment, and fatigue; offering proactive solutions to improve workplace safety and enhance employee well-being.

Thank you to all presenters for their valuable contributions to the Hoosier concrete industry. These sessions provided the IMAA + IRMCA Meeting Attendees with practical strategies and essential insights that can be readily put to action

Kentucky Exploration
The Summer Meeting offered attendees a range of additional activities to enhance their Kentucky experience even further! Baseball enthusiasts visited the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, and witnessed the true craftsmanship behind the Louisville Slugger baseball bats. With a factory tour and a mini-bat souvenir, participants immersed themselves in the sport's history and the bat's iconic heritage.

Meanwhile, golf enthusiasts indulged in a round at the renowned Covered Bridge Golf Club, designed by Fuzzy Zoeller and Clyde Johnston. The stunning course, with its zoysia grass fairways and bentgrass greens, provided an unforgettable afternoon! For those who sought a taste of Kentucky's renowned distillery culture, the Urban Bourbon Tour was the perfect choice. Participants explored "Whiskey Row", touring local distilleries on the renowned Kentucky Bourbon Trail. From Evan Williams to Michter's, our budding sommeliers explored the process and savored the diverse flavors of these exceptional spirits.

Louisville Memories
Tuesday's entertainment took meeting attendees and guests on an extraordinary journey into the world of Thoroughbred horse racing. The evening began with a private tour of the historic Churchill Downs racetrack. The echoes of thundering hooves and the buzzing excitement of past Derby moments enveloped us as we walked the hallowed grounds.

The equine-focused evening ended at the renowned Kentucky Derby Museum. We embraced our inner jockey in the 'Riders Up' race simulator and were transported into the heart-pounding action with a 360° film experience, 'The Greatest Race'.

After exploring two floors of interactive exhibits, we gathered in the museum's grand hall for an amazing dinner. These unforgettable moments at Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum left an indelible mark on our hearts, celebrating the timeless allure of horse racing and reminding us of the heritage that defines our industry.
