How to Tackle the IRMCA Mixer Driver Championship
Event Date: Saturday, July 19, 2025
The IRMCA Mixer Driver Championship (MDC) returns this weekend, bringing together top talent from across Indiana’s ready mixed concrete industry. With a challenging course and a written exam, drivers will test their skills, knowledge, and composure under pressure.
To help competitors prepare, and give spectators insight into the competition, we reached out to two past IRMCA MDC Champions for their competition advice:
- Ethan Miracle – 2023 IRMCA Champion
- Ricardo Lopez – 2024 IRMCA Champion
Here’s what they had to share:
Most Challenging Obstacle: Rear Target (Bumper or Drive-Over)
These two obstacles are difficult because you can’t see the target from the cab, so drivers must rely on truck familiarity and visual landmarks.
Champion tips:
Watch other competitors to study their landmarks and apply what you learn when it's your turn.
Practice is everything. Know your truck inside and out.
Toughest Part of the Written Exam
Questions often cover topics that don’t come up in everyday work or are worded in unfamiliar ways.
Preparation advice:
- Ask your employer for study materials
- Use flashcards
- Have friends or family quiz you
Champion tips:
Both Ethan and Ricardo emphasized that regular review makes a big difference.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Second-guessing your first instinct
- Making unnecessary extra moves (like pulling up again) that result in point deductions
Champion tips:
Stay calm, trust your training, and avoid last-minute changes to your plan.
Where to Shine on the Course
Ethan:
Back-through to the weigh scale: This obstacle tests depth perception and mirror work.
Ricardo:
Rear dock target: This obstacle shows control and handling under pressure.
Champion tips:
Focus on accuracy and smoothness. It’s not just about speed.
Managing Nerves and Pressure
Both champions recommend connecting with fellow drivers. Conversations help ease stress and remind you that everyone is in the same boat.
Champion tips:
Treat the competition like a regular workday. Confidence is key.
Advice for First-Time Competitors
- Visualize the course
- Stick to what you know
- Approach each obstacle as you would on the job
- Believe in your ability
As Ethan says, “You’re doing what you do every day, just show up and do your best.”
The IRMCA Mixer Driver Championship celebrates the hardworking professionals behind the wheel every day. Whether you’re competing or cheering someone on, we hope this year’s event inspires pride in the skill and precision it takes to be Indiana’s best.
Good luck to all drivers! We’ll see you on the course this Saturday, July 19, 2025!
