Building Dreams, One Step at a Time
Each year, the Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association is proud to award the Fore Scholars Scholarship, a program dedicated to supporting students pursuing careers in construction, engineering, and concrete-related fields. The scholarship not only recognizes academic excellence and commitment but also highlights the importance of investing in the next generation of industry leaders.
In 2025, the Fore Scholars Scholarship was awarded to Jaclyn McClure, a standout student at Purdue University Northwest, whose journey into the world of construction is fueled by creativity, perseverance, and a strong vision for the future.
Moment of Pride
When Jaclyn first received the news of being selected as the 2025 Fore Scholars recipient, her first instinct was to share it with the people closest to her.
“I immediately told my mom, dad, and brother. My family has always been my biggest supporters,” she said. “I felt excited to share the amazing news with them. The very next day, I told my professor, Dr. Afshin Zahraee, who had written my recommendation letter.”
Enthusiastic Opportunity
Jaclyn first learned about the Fore Scholars Scholarship through an email from Purdue Northwest. Later, at a concrete seminar hosted on campus, she met industry professionals who spoke highly of the program and encouraged students to apply. “Their enthusiasm motivated me to submit my application,” Jaclyn recalled. That encouragement, paired with her own determination, gave her the confidence to apply.
Lifelong Interest in Building
For Jaclyn, construction has always been a natural fit. She credits her love of building, science, and math as the foundation for her career path. “Growing up, I enjoyed building Legos and creating art, both of which fueled my creativity and problem-solving skills,” she explained. “Science and math have always been my favorite subjects in school. They naturally connected with engineering.”
Her father, an engineer, also played an important role in shaping her interest. Attending safety and construction seminars with her family exposed her to the heavy highway industry early on, sparking curiosity about how projects were designed and built.
Choosing Construction Management Engineering Technology
Jaclyn found the perfect blend of her skills and passions in Construction Management Engineering Technology at Purdue Northwest. “I was inspired to pursue this degree because it allows me to combine my love for building with my passion for art,” she said. “Building Legos taught me about structure, while art taught me about attention to detail.”
Academic Excellence and Campus Involvement
At Purdue Northwest, Jaclyn has embraced every opportunity to grow both inside and outside the classroom. She has consistently earned spots on the Dean’s List and received Semester Honors, showcasing her commitment to academic excellence.
Beyond grades, she is an active member of the Construction Club, which has allowed her to connect with industry professionals, explore leadership opportunities, and build relationships with peers who share her passion for the field.
She also points to her mentor, Dr. Afshin Zahraee, as one of the most influential figures in her academic journey. His encouragement and teaching style made a lasting impact. “His passion for teaching shines through in every class, and he encourages students to ask questions without fear of judgment,” she shared. “He has always been patient and positive, even explaining concepts multiple times until they made sense. His support has shaped my confidence and helped me define my career goals.”
Developing a Passion for Heavy Highway Construction
While Jaclyn appreciates many aspects of construction, she is particularly drawn to heavy highway construction, including roadways, bridges, and other large-scale infrastructure projects. “These projects play a crucial role in shaping communities. I enjoy the scale and impact of this type of work,” she explained.
Concrete in particular, excites her because of its versatility and importance in these projects. The ability to work on infrastructure that connects people and strengthens communities motivates her as she looks toward her career.
Commitment to Sustainability
Jaclyn also recognizes that sustainability is shaping the future of construction and the concrete industry. She believes that her generation of professionals will have an important role to play. “The concrete industry is moving toward more sustainable practices by incorporating green technologies and recycling materials,” she said. “Companies are working to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency during production. I believe this shift will only continue, leading to more environmentally friendly construction practices in the future.”
She hopes to contribute to these advancements by finding innovative ways to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and explore greener technologies in her own future projects.
Overcoming Challenges
Like many students in demanding programs, Jaclyn has faced challenges balancing coursework and responsibilities. But she has found that staying organized and asking for help when needed are key strategies for success. “I overcame challenges by managing my time effectively and making sure to ask questions when I needed help,” she shared.
Her resilience is a reflection of the scholarship theme itself: Finding ways to adapt, persevere, and continue moving forward despite obstacles.
Looking Ahead
As Jaclyn looks toward her career, her goals are clear. She envisions herself working in heavy highway construction and hopes to pursue opportunities as a Project Manager or Estimator. She also expressed admiration for Rieth-Riley Construction Company, an Indiana-based firm known for its strong presence in heavy highway projects. Her leadership strengths, technical knowledge, and focus on sustainability will position her as a valuable contributor to whichever path she chooses.
Role Model for Others
Jaclyn also sees the importance of inspiring others, particularly students who may be hesitant to pursue opportunities in construction or engineering. “My advice is simple: go for it,” she said. “If you enjoy building and learning, then you are likely a great fit for the industry. The only person holding you back is yourself. Construction values dedication, adaptability, and hard work. It is rewarding to see your contributions make a real impact on the world around you.”
She also encourages gender minorities to step into the field with confidence. “The construction industry thrives on diverse perspectives. Opportunities like this scholarship can open doors to a rewarding and impactful career.”
